THE COW CORNER REPRODUCTION AND HEALTH REPORT

The Cow Corner Reproduction and Health Report summarizes several reproductive key performance indicators in one place. It saves the time and trouble of looking in several places for the management information you need. It makes it easy to share information with your veterinarian, nutritionist, or AI specialist who may or may not be familiar with your milking system software. It also provides a side-by side comparison to each of the 2 previous months, the farm goal, and the industry average. It can stand alone as a reproductive consulting service, or it can be part of a Cow Corner robotic management package.

The report answers these questions:

Average Days in Milk – Are there a lot of fresh cows or a lot of late lactation cows in the herd today? Is it seasonally high or low? Is it always taking too long for cows to become pregnant?

Calving Interval – Are cows calving as frequently as they should? It takes about 280 days to make a calf. The rest of the calving interval is determined by how long it takes for a cow to become pregnant.

Preg Rate – Are you inseminating enough cows and are enough of the cows being inseminated getting pregnant?

Percent Pregnant by 150 Days in Milk – How many cows are pregnant by the time you want them pregnant?

Days in Milk at First Service – Are cows being inseminated according to the plan?

Days in Milk at Conception –How many 21-day cycles between first breeding and conception? Are you starting too early? Are you rebreeding open cows quickly enough? Compare this to the Days in Milk at First Service.

Conception by Service Number – How many of the cows that are inseminated become pregnant? Is there a difference between the first service and the later services? If a different protocol or semen type is used on first service, how does that impact conception?

Average Days Dry and Percent of Long and Short Dry Periods – Is the actual length of the dry period following the plan? Long or short dry periods can have a big impact on the next lactation.

Stocking Rate –How does overstocking or understocking affect production, health and reproduction? It’s not always easy to maintain constant cow numbers. What is the impact?

Exits Before 60 Days in Milk –Are cows getting through the transition period without health problems that result in culling or worse? Culling before 60 days is almost always involuntary and unprofitable.

Open Heifers Over 16 Months – Are the protocols effectively making sure that heifers do not “Fall through the cracks?” Do they grow fast enough? Are they moved to the breeding pen on time? Are they found in heat efficiently?

Heifer Age at Calving –Are heifers calving old enough for a healthy productive first lactation? Are they calving young enough to minimize the expense of housing and feeding? Heifers are an expense until they calve.
